Broadway.com has confirmed that the previously reported Great White Way revival of Fiddler on the Roof will begin performances on November 17, 2015. The new production will be directed by Bartlett Sher and featured choreography by Hofesh Shecter, based on the work of original director/choreographer Jerome Robbins. While no theater or casting has been announced, there is speculation that five-time Tony nominee Danny Burstein may play the role of Tevye.
Based on the stories of Sholom Aleichem, Fiddler on the Roof takes place in Anatevka, a village in Tsarist Russia during the eve of the revolution. Tevye is a poor milkman who cares for his five daughters. While he and the rest of the elders in the village are deeply routed in tradition, his daughters’ forward thinking clashes with Tevye’s principles and causes a rift in the family. The score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick features the songs “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” “If I Were A Rich Man” and “Sunrise, Sunset.
Fiddler first opened on Broadway in 1964, winning nine Tonys. The most recent Great White revival opened in 2004 and starred Alfred Molina and later in the run, Harvey Fierstein.
